Design Production: Design for Print Crit

Questions:

What would be the best bindings to make a short book seem worthy of keeping? Why?

  • tape binding
  • stitched
  • unibind
  • stapled
Should I use a thicker stock for the cover or tracing paper to make it look professional and worth keeping?

Do the different topics and info included give a new person to print enough information or should it be more detailed or broken down?

Would it be more beneficial for the audience to have examples in a separate format alongside it to get a better understanding?

The format is at the moment simple would it function better if it was more interactive?

Group 1:

Strengths

  • tracing paper is a strong idea - unique and interactive
  • strong visual research
  • topic analysis good - clear understanding (maybe refine this before making book)
Areas of Improvement

  • need more visuals
  • need to be clearer about focus one book, series, print techniques, binding? etc.
  • good strong initial ideas but refinement is necessary
Considerations

  • is it one book or more of a series?
  • have you thought about colour yet?
  • think about stock to print on other than trace?
  • personal preferred bind - stitching (more durable)
  • examples in a separate format is more appropriate as not to much info in book then
  • tracing paper is not appropriate for cover as it is not durable a thicker stock is much more appropriate
  • looking into interactive elements is a consideration but would this tie into design of book?
Group 2:

Strengths

  • having examples in separate format makes it more accessible and easier than going through a big book
Areas of Improvement

  • tracing paper/thick stock best decided through trial and error see what works best
Considerations

  • content and design a bigger factor to why you would keep a book instead of binding
  • the simple format and interactivity can work together and the tracing paper is a good way of being interactive

PLAN

Research in to:
  • binding
  • audience who how why
  • costing
  • halftone/monotone etc
  • stock samples
  • packaging - belly band, box, slide window, sleeve
  • colour scheme
