Design Principles: Hierarchies

We got asked to get 3

  1. posters
  2. magazines
  3. newspapers
that we thought were
  1. good
  2. average
  3. bad
in
  1. legibility
  2. readability
  3. visual impact
  4. aesthetic quality

once we'd done this we got asked to cut up the text on those items and measure them in hierarchy of

  1. weight
  2. scale
  3. and importance of information
Newspaper:
good
I think this paper is good design, it sticks to the same few fonts, laying out the main story title clearly and complimentary in position to the photograph as well as breaking the subtitles stories with a small red underline still in composition to the background photo. The layout and font use is consistent throughout the paper is very clearly structured creating a good flow as well as separating the different parts such as title, intro and main body text.

average
I think this design keeps the heavy info simple and breaks it down well visually with the use of the colour red and scale of the statistics making it eye catching. Keeping the colours and layout simplistic it makes it easier for its audience, students, to communicate with the important information with ease rather than difficulty they'd find with a layout involving a large block of text.

Magazine:
good
This magazine has really good layout design and the legibility and readability throughout is consistent especially in type. Not only is it well designed in type but visually creates an impact and atheistically is pleasing to the eye. I think the whole thing has been executed well.

average
This is a page in womens add in magazine, i think the design is kept simple which is good as it keeps it clear and easy to find the information you want on the page. Although its quite clear and visually easy to process i think its not as athesitically pleasing as others such as the one in the koople magazine shown above and the text is quite small and uninteresting compared to the style of fashion being demonstrated.

bad
This magazine front page is busy and uses multipliable fonts which is confusing to the eye and you don't no what to take in first. I think its unclear and visually to activate to process successfully. As you can see from the picture below the busy layout and multiple fonts are consistent throughout the spread and is chaotic.
